OLE Health addresses Zika virus on KTVU

UPDATED 3/8/16

Via Napa Valley Register: A pregnant Napa County woman has tested positive for the Zika virus, the first such case in Napa County and possibly the first in the Bay Area.

The Napa County Public Health Division announced Wednesday that it had received confirmation from the California Department of Public Health of the case.

This Zika virus case is not a threat to public health. There is no active transmission of Zika virus in Napa County, and the two kinds of mosquitoes that transmit the virus have not been found here,” said Dr. Karen Relucio, Napa County health officer.

OLE Health is actively still coordinating with the Napa Department of Public Health, Queen of the Valley Medical Center: Women’s Services and St. Helena Women’s Health Center in an effort to contact patients who may have traveled outside of the country during or before their pregnancy. As of mid- February, our staff ask all clients  seeking services at either our Women’s Health Center and our Perinatal Services sites if they or their partners have traveled or have plans to travel outside the US. Our Women’s Health Department team is also calling all active pregnant clients who receive services at OLE Health to ask them of recent travel and to screen for potential Zika exposure.

All OLE Health providers are also counseling clients appropriately who access any of our sites for pregnancy testing as well as counseling clients who are actively seeking to get pregnant if they have upcoming travel plans outside the US. OLE Health is working with any at-risk patient identified to discuss screening recommendations in partnership with the Napa Department of Health to conduct blood testing procedures and any follow up steps as needed. We are currently following all CDC recommendations for identifying any client who may be at-risk of the virus and we are actively engaging our patient-base via web, E-Newsletter and informational handouts to provide more information on awareness and screening. Any client who believes they may be at-risk should call their prenatal service provider or call OLE Health Women’s Health Services Department directly at 707.257.7821.

OLE Health is working with the Napa Department of Public Health, Queen of the Valley Medical Center and St. Helena Women’s Health Center to contact patients who may have traveled outside of the country during or before their pregnancy.

OLE Health will continue to reach out to 361 pregnant patients in our practice to appropriately identify any client that may have been at-risk.

OLE Health has reported an initial estimate of 1 in every 5 pregnant patients at its Women’s Health Services center to be at-risk for exposure based on early sampling and we have relayed that information to the Department of Public Health.
